While watching the video above, I thought I saw Yuta Orisaka wearing loafers with ankle socks. He was actually wearing sandals and thus no socks of any kind, but the moment I saw it that way, I realized I had been under a curse: “Ankle socks are uncool and you shouldn’t wear them.” I then remembered several times in the past when I had suppressed the urge to wear loafers with ankle socks, and almost simultaneously, that curse lifted off my shoulders.
It had been a long-lasting curse. It started when I was around 20 and studying abroad in Canada, when a Japanese female classmate mocked me for it. At the time, I owned almost exclusively ankle-length socks. It wasn’t even that I liked them—it just felt normal to wear them, and I thought wearing longer socks of any other length was what was truly uncool. I was rattled not only to find someone in my immediate circle who viewed things in the exact opposite way, but also to have that person turn a blade against me. Hiding it from that girl, her friends, and even myself, I threw away my socks and bought new ones. I hadn’t bought ankle-length socks ever since. I think I’ll go buy a couple of pairs next time.
I feel that practicing contentment—”knowing what is enough”—should place just as much weight on figuring out what genuinely fulfills us as it does on cutting out the unnecessary. In my case, comparing the experience of watching YouTube videos to listening to music makes this clear. When I watch videos, I get a tight, extremely unpleasant sensation in my head, yet I can’t stop watching; I play content one after another until I end up exhausted. Music, on the other hand, when I listen past the restlessness in my mind, draws me into the inherent beauty of the song, and that acts like an anchor, giving me a grounded sense of stability. No matter how you look at it, I should be listening to music, but before I know it, I often end up turning on a video. Calling oneself a “dopamine addict” might sound amusing and self-deprecating, but if the flood of such slang serves to conceal the fact that humans, including myself, have been driven into this state by the driving-force technologies of capitalism—including YouTube—and functions as a way to shift the responsibility from corporations to individuals, then I feel it shouldn’t be used so self-deprecatingly.
I touched my DAW for the first time in a few days. As I was programming MIDI for individual drum parts, the processing load apparently became too heavy and it stopped playing audio, causing me to collapse to my knees. Since I was sitting in a chair, I was actually fine, but having no idea how to deal with it, I cried out to ChatGPT. When I told ChatGPT that I didn’t understand its initial explanation by even a millimeter, its tone shifted to one reserved for talking to a child, and it began mentioning only one thing per explanation. I found myself thinking that this, in its own way, was rather inconvenient.
