I listened to Dinosaur Jr. for the first time. The overall contours of the sound was more or less what I have expected, but I didn’t anticipated the way the singer would sing. His voicing was kind of thin, and there seemed no scream nor high tone. I recalled the look of the frontman while on the train and wondered how he would perform on stage. I’ll check it out later if I’d be still interested.
A colleague of mine quitted the company today. I didn’t know that it was today until this morning. He has been the only one in the company whom I admired, even though we worked together less than a month.
The other day, my superior and a bossy colleague talked in the office and they were shameless enough to backbite his demeanour, ability to create charts, and the like in a way that I could hear every word they uttered. Eventually, they concluded that he wouldn’t be suited to our company (I fucking hate it when they say these kind of thing, implying that they’ve got something superior to someone they dislike; what kind of superiority one could ever have, when they are not even aware that they are judging someone solely based on their odd, outdated, unspoken cultural rules?), being convinced for some weird reason that there was absolutely nothing that they could have done better for him. Ha! From my perspective, they deprived him of opportunities to demonstrate his capacity and enjoy working with us while believing they were the ones who have the right to judge him. What an absolute moron.
I couldn’t behave well when we saw him off. I wanted to tell him that I was on his side and he was not alone there, and I think he knew that I was trying to convey that to him. But there was not enough time to put that into words. When I said I would go down the building with him, he pushed me lightly and suggested I should stay in. I didn’t know how to respond to it, and so I ended up standing still. After the door of the elevator got shut, my superior asked me if I knew he was going to quit today. Such insensibility of hers told something about what kind of person she was, I thought.
On my way home, I bought a pack of shumai at a supermarket. When he and I came back from the visit to our boss a few weeks ago, we talked about random stuff, such as food we liked. He then told me that, after work on weekdays, he liked having shumai with a good amount of mustard on it. I remembered that conversation when finding a pack of them on the shelf on the chilly aisle. I ate them at home.
Woke around 8 am, vaguely remembering that I didn’t do the dishes after the supper previous night. As I had fallen asleep around 1 am, it wouldn’t be no surprise if my mind had been unwell, yet I felt fairly okay. I reckon it was because I slept about 7 hours, after all. I quickly went through the stuff I planned to do today in my head, and drunk a glass of water, There seemed to be just enough time to enjoy Sunday.
Looking at a blanket I threw on an easy chair at Saturday night, I thought that it might be better for it to stay there. I bought this blanket a few days ago, planning to hang it on the wall behind the monitor. It looked a little too well on the chair, and so I decided to leave it there. Later, I realised that there was another reason I should use it to cover the chair; it would protect the fabric of the chair which cannot be washed unless you leave it to the cleaner. I didn’t know how the fuck I should bring it to them to begin with, so it was a little relief to relish. Anyhow, I ended up purchasing another blanket to hand on the wall. Heaven knows if I made a good decision there. It is going to be delivered next week.
I went to Jiyugaoka by bike since the weather seemed rather pleasant. It turned out the humidity was still pretty high, and got sweated on the way there and back. I found a couple of things I looked for, e.g., a small broom and clips, but didn’t come across anything serendipitous. Once back home, I used Affinity to do some stuff.
It was really important for myself to use a tool with which I had to spend fair amount of time to decipher what the fuck I could actually do with it. As anticipated, I stumbled upon troubles where I couldn’t follow the instruction that a tutorial demonstrated. I felt rather frustrated; if the same thing happened a year ago, I would quit pursuing before complaining a bit. But I complained to my chatGPT, acting like a child saying “I have no idea what I’m supposed to do here! You need to tell me how to do it correctly”. Surprisingly, it worked well; this behaviour, I believe, enabled me to keep working on it and finished the tutorial. I realised that, on various occasions over the past years, I chose not to complain in order to hinder myself from facing the fact that I was not enough to satisfy my own belief that I was competent in stuff – and gave them up. I thought that complaint is a way of acknowledging that you’re not as competent as you wish, which would prepare a new starting point for you.
Just as I was getting up and thinking it might be time for a bath, I heard wings buzzing right beside my ear. At that exact moment, my arm bent with a horrible gnngh in some unnatural direction. I thought I was flailing it at my attacker, but I didn’t come close to hitting anything, and for the next few seconds, the sound of it flying around my head continued. I thought I was going to die.
For the past few days, there had been a dead cockroach lying in the drainage channel on my floor of the building. Every time I walked past, I would stare at it in silence — “……” — and make sure it was still dead. Perhaps that was my mistake, because as I fled from the buzzing, the image of it came back to me in vivid detail.
After a few rotations powered by the full reach of my arm, I stood by the front door and peered towards the source of the noise. It turned out to be some sort of insect about the size of an adzuki bean. Its wings were absurdly loud.
I immediately pulled two cans out of the cupboard: one for preventing cockroaches and another meant to be sprayed on window screens and doors to keep insects away. The insect had landed on the ceiling and was wriggling about, so I took aim and fired the two sprays at it in turn. The cans made an enormous racket, but neither spray reached the ceiling. Instead, the room filled with mist until it looked like the club scene from Trainspotting. The peculiar smell made me dizzy, and I began to think the insect repellent might finish me off before it finished the insect. The only other weapon within reach was a sticky lint roller.
I gripped the handle, waited until the insect came close to hovering directly above me, then took aim and swung. After missing about five times, I thought, Agh, it’s over. But my next swing happened to connect, and I heard the insect hit the floor. No matter how hard I searched, though, I couldn’t find its body. The insect had vanished. If it appears again, it will be in my dreams tonight. I’m sleeping with my eyes open.
