| Mr Nelson, Did you kill people?

I woke up at 6:00, headed to Shinjuku, and went to see Mr Nelson, Did You Kill People? They were screening it three times today, but when the movie ended and I stepped out of the theater, a sign was posted at the entrance saying that all showings were sold out.

It was a work that vividly portrayed the horrors of war. Because of that, I felt it carried a powerful plea for peace. Above all, what became clear was that war utterly destroys everything people hold dear, nurture, and pour their love into in their daily lives, whether tangible or intangible. The protagonist, Allen, enlisted in the military harboring anger toward violence. Surrounded by people who ordered him to gun down innocent people, expected him to carry it out, and encouraged it as if it were completely normal, his feelings and sense of valuing human life and dignity were rapidly warped. Before he knew it, he was pulling the trigger not out of a fear of being killed, but because he actually “wanted to kill” the Vietnamese person in front of him.

Was he abnormal for killing people with intent? Is that purely his problem? Naturally, that cannot be the case. In a situation where, the moment you are told to face right, your brains might be blown out for no reason at all if you fail to do so, it is probably only natural to lose the ability to maintain the recognition that facing right is wrong. If people are shoved into such circumstances by fear and mob mentality before they can even look around them, most individuals will stop doubting the order to face right and will end up facing right without even being told. We must take into account that his development of a desire to “kill” was heavily driven by demands from that kind of environment.

Even so, I think what tormented him the most in the film was his belief that he had to shoulder “all by himself” the urge to kill welling up from deep within his chest—or more specifically, the feeling of “himself” wanting to kill someone he knew to be completely innocent. Were there any scenes in the movie featuring the people who orchestrated the war? Not for a single second. The individuals responsible for giving the commands that moved soldiers around like lifeless chess pieces are the ones who bear responsibility for the desire to “kill” that drove him. Despite that, they never take on that responsibility. They acted as though soldiers bear sole responsibility for every injury, with each individual carrying everything on their own shoulders. That must have been baked into the propaganda repeated from before the war began until its end. Through such cunning and cowardly methods, they not only manage to avoid being cast into the vortex of the war themselves, but they also shift all the blame onto others. We need to bear in mind that this is how runaway power behaves.

Another striking aspect was the sound. War is terribly loud. The sound of gunfire, exploding bombs, helicopters, and bombers, along with the screams of friend and foe alike—it was so loud that there were moments I found it hard to bear even just listening to it in a movie theater. No one could live a normal life amidst that kind of noise. Just that fact alone felt like an act of violence and an outrage against human existence.

Having gotten up early, after coming home and having a light lunch, I ended up sleeping for about three hours. Even after waking up, I didn’t have much energy, and while sitting around in a daze, evening arrived. The laundry I’d hung out yesterday still wasn’t dry. I cooked some rice, made a stir-fry, and ate. While doing so, I threw away some cabbage, eggplant, and onions from the fridge. They had all gone bad after sitting there for too long. How many times is this now for cabbage? I wondered if I should just stop buying it.

When I went to the supermarket, bananas were on sale for 100 yen. Feeling stoked, I was rummaging through them when an older clerk restocking the shelves said, “We’ve got some big ones,” and held out a bunch for me. When I parroted back, “They are big, aren’t they?”, he chuckled. I thanked him and left.

I come to this supermarket every Saturday to buy groceries for the week, and from what I can tell, a wide variety of people work here. The staff skews older, and the guy who gave me the bananas is probably past sixty. It’s not really the kind of area young people flock to live in, which is likely part of the reason. That said, there are some young people among them. The other day, as I was walking down the beverage aisle, I overheard two employees talking as they passed each other. One was a gentle-looking older man with thick black-rimmed glasses; the other was a pale, downcast boy who looked like a college student. The older man called out to the boy, who was carting plastic bottles to the shelf, “Don’t push yourself too hard, okay?” The boy nodded. He might be new. I wondered what circumstances led him to end up working there. Those kinds of thoughts crossed my mind.

In the evening, while I was surfing the web in my room, I heard a landline phone ringing from next door. I didn’t think much of it at first, but the moment I realized that even though the sound was muffled, phone-level noise carried through quite clearly, I was struck with horror. Since I’d barely ever heard a peep from either of my neighbors since moving in, I had jumped to the conclusion that the walls were thick, and had frequently shouted in loud voices and improvised crazy songs. I had also practiced doing impressions of characters from Chiikawa in the bathroom, and blurted out every single thought that popped into my head while drying my hair. All of those things must have been just as loud as that phone ringing. My neighbors might have thought a giant talking parrot had moved in and wouldn’t shut up. Actually, I really hope that’s what they thought. I am so terribly sorry.

While looking into domestic political developments—specifically, how the current administration has continued to act dictatorially this year by ignoring protests and petition campaigns, laying the groundwork for a system that makes war possible—I ended up watching the Liberia episode of Hyper Hardboiled Gourmet Report on YouTube. That was the first time I learned there had been a civil war in Liberia. I might have heard of it before, but I knew no details. It left a strong impression on me: the locals, who were initially deeply suspicious of the reporting crew, became extremely forthcoming and answered their questions with genuine warmth once they realized the crew wasn’t there to exploit them, but to share their way of life with the wider world. Later, when I casually glanced at the newspaper, I saw that a war movie called Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill Someone? is currently playing in theaters. It felt like a sign, so I booked a ticket for the very first screening tomorrow morning. About 70 percent of the seats seemed to be taken. Thinking that everyone must have something on their minds driving them to go see it kind of lit a little spark of courage in my chest.

Among all the various musical instruments, I feel that the human voice has an especially unique resonance. On my way home from work, listening to the song below, a gradual longing to see someone welled up inside me. I didn’t really know who I wanted to see, though. I suppose it just meant I was craving human warmth. It is autumn, after all. The only thing that was clear to me was that this feeling had been stirred up by the voice in this song. A voice harbors a person’s presence, gaze, and attitude. I think this emotional impulse of wanting to connect with such qualities might be one of the fundamental desires in life.

The moon was out. It made me wonder if werewolves can sing. Do their vocal cords lose the ability to sing in the process of transforming into a wolf? Looking back at the depictions of werewolves I’ve seen up until now, all I can tell is that there were probably some who could sing. It might be a completely trivial matter.

Over the past few days, hives have been breaking out all over my body at night. I can’t really think of any obvious reason, but it’s probably due to the changing weather. Sometimes, just the itchiness appears before the hives actually break out. Even when I scratch with my fingertips or nails, I ultimately can’t quite pinpoint where the itch is coming from, so I end up scratching over and over. Then, thinking, “This time for sure!” and scratching while staring intently to catch the source of the itch, the skin in front of my eyes starts to feel like it doesn’t belong to me. Or rather, my own skin—and by extension, my entire body—appears in my field of vision with a slight sense of a foreign object. It’s a strange sensation. If I had to put it into words, it might be the feeling of “I’ve discovered myself!” It reminds me of Lacan’s mirror stage.

When I look at video footage my parents took with a camcorder when I was little, I’m always begging them, “Turn the LCD screen toward me!” Whichever parent flips the screen around and I confirm myself on it, I smile happily. You can’t tell which way the screen is facing just by watching the footage, but you can tell instantly by looking at me on it. It’s obvious from my expression, but above all, because I bring my face ridiculously close to try and see myself. I wonder if that was sort of a lingering vestige of the mirror stage. Nowadays, whenever I catch my reflection in a train window or a glass storefront, a feeling that mixes a little bit of shame and disappointment lingers in my chest. I think to myself, “I’ve changed quite a bit.”

I bought some second-hand clothes online for the first time in a while. The variety of colors hanging in my closet made me feel better than I expected. When I tried them on, one jacket was a bit too big, while another felt just a little tight in the shoulders. As has always been the case for me, used clothes are also one of the devices through which I discover my own body. Clothes I expected to fit end up all wrong in color or size, and yet conversely, things I thought would never fit gradually grow on me. Going through that cycle over and over, every now and then, I find myself captivated by my own reflection mirrored in the city streets. And then, once again, I lose track of who my body really is.

While watching the video above, I thought I saw Yuta Orisaka wearing loafers with ankle socks. He was actually wearing sandals and thus no socks of any kind, but the moment I saw it that way, I realized I had been under a curse: “Ankle socks are uncool and you shouldn’t wear them.” I then remembered several times in the past when I had suppressed the urge to wear loafers with ankle socks, and almost simultaneously, that curse lifted off my shoulders.
It had been a long-lasting curse. It started when I was around 20 and studying abroad in Canada, when a Japanese female classmate mocked me for it. At the time, I owned almost exclusively ankle-length socks. It wasn’t even that I liked them—it just felt normal to wear them, and I thought wearing longer socks of any other length was what was truly uncool. I was rattled not only to find someone in my immediate circle who viewed things in the exact opposite way, but also to have that person turn a blade against me. Hiding it from that girl, her friends, and even myself, I threw away my socks and bought new ones. I hadn’t bought ankle-length socks ever since. I think I’ll go buy a couple of pairs next time.

I feel that practicing contentment—”knowing what is enough”—should place just as much weight on figuring out what genuinely fulfills us as it does on cutting out the unnecessary. In my case, comparing the experience of watching YouTube videos to listening to music makes this clear. When I watch videos, I get a tight, extremely unpleasant sensation in my head, yet I can’t stop watching; I play content one after another until I end up exhausted. Music, on the other hand, when I listen past the restlessness in my mind, draws me into the inherent beauty of the song, and that acts like an anchor, giving me a grounded sense of stability. No matter how you look at it, I should be listening to music, but before I know it, I often end up turning on a video. Calling oneself a “dopamine addict” might sound amusing and self-deprecating, but if the flood of such slang serves to conceal the fact that humans, including myself, have been driven into this state by the driving-force technologies of capitalism—including YouTube—and functions as a way to shift the responsibility from corporations to individuals, then I feel it shouldn’t be used so self-deprecatingly.

I touched my DAW for the first time in a few days. As I was programming MIDI for individual drum parts, the processing load apparently became too heavy and it stopped playing audio, causing me to collapse to my knees. Since I was sitting in a chair, I was actually fine, but having no idea how to deal with it, I cried out to ChatGPT. When I told ChatGPT that I didn’t understand its initial explanation by even a millimeter, its tone shifted to one reserved for talking to a child, and it began mentioning only one thing per explanation. I found myself thinking that this, in its own way, was rather inconvenient.

  • 仕事 | work

It’s probably a terrible mistake to force changes only where superficial tweaks can be made just because you want immediate results, leaving the fundamental problems postponed semi-permanently. My boss doesn’t seem to see it that way, though. My soul isn’t dead enough to let me persuade people with a straight face, acting as though makeshift deception is the most legitimate course of action. If things were to collapse while working on the root issues, the blame should fall not on having chosen not to take a stopgap measure, but on having continued to neglect the underlying problem. It’s ironic, but if I were to voice such thoughts in my current environment, I’d probably be condemned for being “too lacking in a sense of responsibility.” Responsibility within the values of a village-like community? I wouldn’t accept that kind of burden for the world. I think there are surprisingly many things in work that we should ignore, right alongside those we need to look at properly.

Today, cast in something like an errand boy’s role, I ran back and forth between the office, Shinjuku, and Yurakucho. While doing unpaid overtime, a chat message was pinged over demanding that I move around the exact same way tomorrow morning—solidifying my status as an errand boy—and I quietly thought, “I’m going to kill you.” It was while I got off one stop before my nearest station, went into a Saint Marc Cafe, and was eating a hot dog. It had been quite a while since I’d last had dinner out. I couldn’t quite figure out what all the people sitting around me had come there to do. The hot dog contained not just a sausage, but also some onion resembling faux sauerkraut, making it slightly exotic. Suddenly, I remembered a croque monsieur I ate in France when I was 19, which I’d gone to with a friend at the time. We walked down the street gazing through the glass case of a street stall at the thick white cheese melting all over the bread. Come to think of it, maybe I never actually ate that croque monsieur. I don’t remember well.

I found a delivery missed notice from the post office in my mailbox, but the delivery date written on it was yesterday. It wasn’t there yesterday, so I’m guessing the driver forgot to leave it at the time and went out of their way to bring it today. When the driver realized they were holding a missed delivery notice that shouldn’t even be in their possession anymore, I wonder how they felt. If it was a feeling of bitter awkwardness, I’d say, “Hey, I totally get that.”

Since I’d promised to give an iron frying pan and an oil bottle to someone I was communicating with on Jimoty, I wrapped up work a bit early and came home. I had told them I was available to hand them over between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM, but this goofball hadn’t messaged me with an arrival time even after 8:00 PM. Knowing it would be a hassle if they texted “I’ve arrived” while I was in the shower, I put some rice in the rice cooker and made some miso soup. Still no word by the time I finished cooking. I considered sending a message saying, “I’m about to take a shower so I won’t be able to reply,” before heading to the bath, but figuring I had no obligation to announce my bathing schedule to a total stranger, I just quietly took a shower. After getting out, drying my hair, and while I was in the middle of dinner, I finally got a message. They said they’d be arriving twenty minutes from that moment. Thinking, Geez, you’re late, you idiot!, I replied, “Thanks for getting in touch. See you then :).” During the handoff, I watched him jam the frying pan and other items into his bicycle basket while saying things like, “Do you think you can carry that okay? I wrapped it in a towel just in case,” and finally sent him off with a “Drive safe.” Once I was back inside, I thought, “He actually seemed like a nice guy.”

I feel like the leaves on the pothos I’m growing are getting paler. To my eyes, it looks like it’s losing its vitality, so since last weekend I’ve been sticking plant food into the soil, but so far there’s been no change you could call an effect. Aerial roots are stretching out from the stem of the Ficus sitting right next to it, giving off a somewhat starved impression. When I asked ChatGPT, it said it’s fine to cut these aerial roots off. But if doing that isn’t going to make anything any better, I figure it might as well stay misshapen and a little creepy.

Don’t Look Back in Anger

Don’t Look Back in Angerを観に行った。

A kind of calmness came over me, and I recognised it with a slight surprise. That sensation was through my body and mind while I opened the packages delivered this morning, put away the cardboards and rapping papers, and made swags I made with dried flowers for my room’s adornment. Normally, I would feel a rush of anxiety and a sense of restlessness and couldn’t enjoy at all the process. What would be left afterwards would be the same anxiety and restlessness, and so I would get more anxious and feel that nothing has become better despite my intervention to the reality. Anxiety, I reckon, has a unique time signature. It deprives you of the sense that time, therefore any matters including yourself, flows in being. The everyday life proves it; even if you don’t seem to do anything significant to the environment, dust and moll in your room will be noticeable unless you clean them. It shows that there’s movement in a given space and that it consists of you and many other elements that you have interacted with.

I made sure today, though I must have considered this sort of message banal if I had seen it in social media, that it is immensely important for yourself that YOU invest some time to do something meaningful FOR YOURSELF, where the the time you spend should be enough to acknowledge it is really meaningful and that your decision to spend time on it as well as to do whatever you have chosen to put into practice means something to you. It gives you an existential ground where, since you have just opted to do something significant for yourself, you realise you can actually handle your life the way you hope. It is a practice of getting back a sense of subjectivity. Depression takes this away while you’re suffocated by your own practice of excessive passivity where everything that you do to the world and that you’re surrounded by appears to you as something determines what you are, hence your incapacity to deal with what you face at your own will. Perhaps recognising the meaningfulness of your own doing to your existence could be a way of diverting from an everlasting spiral of self-harming thinking.

Hung a rug on the wall behind my monitor, and decorate the curtain rails with swags of dried flowers. I haven’t been able to find the right kind of beddings, so I need to keep working on it; yet, my room seems to have been improving gradually. I also looked into supplements to support my nutritions intake for a fair amount of time while listening to The Spoon’s album, and managed to buy a few that I chose to try. This action made me realise that I’ve forgotten that I payed insufficient attention to my health and that my mind has been preoccupied with the price of stuff. I have to admit that I could have made better decisions, so I will make them from now onward. Alas! I’m shocked how life only grows little by little.
